How to Install SQL Server 2012

Installation of SQL Server 2012:

First, setup an administrator account with a password in your system. Click here to see how to set an account as administrator and set the password in windows operating systems.

Second, download the SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Evolution Edition. Click here to see how to download the SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Evaluation Edition.

Once you have the extracted files, you will see an installation file (setup.exe) as shown in below image.

Double click on setup file to open installation, click 'yes' to open the window of SQL Server Installation centre as shown in below image.

Click on 'Installation' in left side pane, then after click on 'New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation' from the options (first one) in the right side pane. Shown in below image.

Now it will open a new window to check 'Setup Support Rules', it should have passed all the rules as shown in below image. If anything shows as failed, the installation will be completed with errors. It is better to solve those issues and then continue the installation. Then click OK.

Now a new window will open, it will take us to the actual installation wizard. The below image is showing, the installation is trying to check for any new updates available for this installation. We can also skip these updates from being scan and install during installation of SQL Server by clicking on "Skip Scan". But it is good to leave it to scan and install the new updates.

If the updates are available then these updates will also installed along with installation of SQL Server, otherwise it will show as the new updates are not available. The below image shows that there are some updates are available. Then click "Next".

It is going to scan and download the updates shown in below image. Once this is completed, click on Install.

After click on Install in the above image, it will open a new window to start actual SQL Server installation process by checking SETUP SUPPORT RULES as shown in below image. All these rules should be passed. It may not be the problem if you see anything under WARNINGS. But we have to make sure that nothing noted under FAILED. Then click Next.

Choose the option 'Perform a new installation of SQL Server 2012' as shown in the below image since we are going to install a new SQL Server instance. The other options shows upgrading the existing instances. Then click Next.

Select and specify the version since we are installing a free version as shown in the below image. Then click Next.

Accept the license agreement, then click Next.

Choose the 'SQL Server Feature Installation', then click Next.

Choose all the features to install. Click on 'Select All' button in order to select all the features. The features (shared features) appearing in Gray colour represents those are already installed in the same system. Then click Next.

It will check the installation rules. All the rules should be passed as shown in below image. Then click Next.

Either choose the default instance or named instance. Choose the option 'Named Instance' and give a name (this will be name for SQL Server) as shown in below image.

The below image shows that already there are two SQL Server instances installed. One is default instance (MSSSQLSERVER) and other one is a named instance (CS). A system can install only on default instance and many no.of named instances.
Then click Next.

The below image is showing the required disk space. Nothing we can do here. Click on Next.

Now we have to set the "Startup Type" is 'Automatic' as shown in below image. Don't click Next. Scroll down to set the Account name (service account name) for all the services.

Change the Account Name to a valid account as shown in below images.

To set the Account name, drop down the list and click on "Browse".

A new window (Select User or Group) will be displayed, here we have to choose an account among the registered accounts in the current windows operating system or domain system.

Click on the Advanced button.

After click on Advanced button, it will open a new window as shown in below image.

Click on 'Find Now' button. After click on Find Now button, it will list out all the available accounts from the current windows operating system or domain system.

Choose one account from the list and then click OK.

After click OK in the above image, it will display the account name as shown in below image. Again click OK.

After click OK in the above image, it will display the Account name for service (SQL Server Agent). Now copy the same name and pasted to all other services as shown in below image. And give the password of this account. This is the password that we are using to login into the windows machine.

Set the Account name, Password and Startup Type as shown in below image. Then click Next.

The default authentication mode is 'Windows authentication mode'. Let it be. Click on "Add Current User" button to set current user as default SQL Server administrator. Then click Next.

In the same way click on "Add Current User" to set the current use as default administrator for Analysis Services. Then click Next.

Select the Install and Configure. Click Next.

Nothing we can do here. Click Next.

The setup running configuration rules. As usual, every rule should be passed. If anything noted in the failed section, we have look into that before proceed. If anything noted under Warning or Skipped, you can ignore them and proceed further.

Click Next
